Handpoke has enjoyed exceptional popularity recently. However — despite appearances — it is a method that has been known for many, many years. It is often referred to as a primitive or tribal technique. It is an interesting alternative to tattooing with an electric razor, which is used by most tattooists. Unfortunately, it is very time consuming, plus it can be associated with pain. Here is everything you should know about handpoke tattoos.

Handpoke tattoo — what does this method consist in?

As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, you don’t need an electric machine to get a handpoke tattoo. Instead, the tattoo artist or tattooer uses a needle and ink. Some people also use thread. They wrap the needle with it, which is necessary for the ink to absorb better.

The process of creating a handpoke tattoo is very labor and time consuming. Similar to drawings done with other techniques, the whole thing starts with preparing a sketch on the skin. When the design is ready, the tattoo artist or tattooist heats the needle and dips it into the ink. Then he or she proceeds with the tattooing, which is a steady puncturing of the skin and, consequently, inserting the ink under it. This is how — dot by dot — the tattoo is created.

Handpoke tattoo — opinions

Creating a handpoke tattoo requires great concentration and at the same time patience and precision. That’s why tattooists and tattooists who specialize in this technique are often referred to as artists. Unfortunately, there are also less flattering opinions. This is because the handpoke method is sometimes used by amateurs who do not want to invest in professional equipment. Such actions affect both the professionals who cultivate this technique and the health of people who decide to get such tattoo. Therefore, we will repeat like a mantra to choose only trusted tattoo studios with good reviews.

Handpoke tattoo — does it hurt?

Does a handpoke tattoo hurt? Unfortunately there is no single answer to this question. There are opinions that handpoke tattoo is less painful than a design created with the use of electric razor. Nevertheless, this is a very individual issue. It is worth remembering that the sensations accompanying a tattooed person depend on many factors, including the so-called pain tolerance and also on the place where the tattoo is located, its filling or lack thereof.

Tattoo handpoke — price

How much does a handpoke tattoo cost? We’ll repeat ourselves but unfortunately in this case the answer is not obvious either. The price of a handpoke tattoo (or any other kind of tattoo) depends on factors such as its size, as well as the popularity of the studio or the artist. Location can also have an impact — in bigger cities tattoo prices are usually higher than in smaller ones. One thing is certain though: it is not worth saving money here. Health and safety of the person who decides to get a tattoo should come first.

Handpoke tattoo — what should be kept in mind?

There are a few more things to keep in mind before getting a (not only) handpoke tattoo. Make sure that there are no medical contraindications for this kind of drawing and remember that it should not be done on tanned or irritated skin. What is more, choose a professional studio and make sure that hygiene is taken care of (sterile needles and gloves are an absolute must). And be sure to ask your tattoo artist how to properly take care of your tattoo after it is done. It is very important.
